Maafaru International Airport, located in the picturesque Noonu Atoll of the Maldives, is set to reopen its doors this October, promising an enhanced travel experience for visitors seeking a more private and luxurious entry into this tropical paradise. Since its commercial operations commenced on December 1, 2019, Maafaru Airport quickly emerged as the preferred choice for private jet travelers. Its close proximity to some of the Maldives' most prestigious hotels—such as Cheval Blanc Randheli, Velaa Private Island, and Soneva Jani—has made it an appealing option for clients desiring exclusivity and convenience.

Additionally, Maafaru International Airport has established itself as the preferred gateway for elite travelers visiting prestigious resorts such as One & Only Reethi Rah, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi, and Joali Being. By offering a less congested alternative to the busier airports in the Maldives, Maafaru Airport elevates the travel experience, catering to the refined tastes of discerning tourists. This seamless entry point not only ensures privacy and convenience but also embodies the essence of luxury that these resorts promise

In December 2022, the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure of the Government of Maldives awarded the Development and Expansion of Maafaru Airport – Phase II to MTCC Plc. This ambitious expansion project includes significant enhancements, such as the extension of the south runway by 650 meters, the reclamation of 1,045,925 cubic meters of land for the extension work, and the construction of a 5,700-meter revetment. Additionally, 32,300 square meters of asphalt will be laid on the airfield, with further paint markings and landscaping on an additional 5,600 square meters of the taxiway.

Since its inception, Maafaru Airport has been the only international airport in Noonu Atoll, which boasts a population of approximately 16,706 residents. The airport has successfully handled over 300 flights per year, and with the runway extension to 2,850 meters, the operator, Island Aviation Services Limited, expects a substantial increase in flight traffic and passenger numbers.

While the reopening of the airport is scheduled for October, ongoing apron expansion and remote apron works will still be in progress during this period. Once all projects are completed, N. Maafaru International Airport is poised to significantly boost the economic vibrancy of the Noonu Atoll region, heralding a new era of growth and development for the area.

As the Maldives continues to attract global travelers, the expansion of Maafaru Airport represents a critical step in enhancing the islands' potential as a premier luxury destination. Tourists can look forward to a seamless travel experience, allowing them to indulge in the beauty and tranquility that the Maldives has to offer.

Avia Maldives and its Maafaru team are excited and ready to welcome flights to Maafaru International Airport!

What will be the biggest air plane possible to land once you reopens in October? Would you be able to land a Boeing 737?
